Building a wall between the USA and Mexico to prohibit immigrants from entering America illegally and also to prevent illegal drugs from entering our great country has been in the news for many months. President Trump has stated throughout his campaign that building a wall was of the utmost importance to guarantee the well being and secure the safety of the American people. Many Americans have said this was just a folly of President Trump and that he never had any intention of building a wall.
I would like to tell you a story about a man commissioned by God to build a wall so that God's people would be protected from enemies and plunderers. That man's name was Nehemiah and his story is found in a short book in the Old Testament called by the same name...Nehemiah.
In approximately 486 BC, the Babylonians under the leadership of King Nebuchadnezzar raided Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple and destroyed the walls surrounding Jerusalem and provided protection for the Israelites. The people were taken back to Babylon as slaves where they remained for 70 years.
God commissioned a man by the name of Nehemiah and sent him to Jerusalem to rebuild the decaying and destroyed walls that once protected God’s holy city. Nehemiah wasn’t an expert in masonry nor was he a civil engineer. No, Nehemiah was the king’s cupbearer (in other words he was the king’s food and drink taster).
Nehemiah had to beg and borrow supplies to rebuild the city’s walls. And he was opposed at every step along the way of rebuilding being goaded and ridiculed by his enemies (sound familiar in today’s building of a wall along our southern border). Why, Nehemiah’s enemies even tried to kill him.
Nothing could stop Nehemiah from his assigned task. Opponents of the US/Mexico wall today say that it’s an impossibility and the people building it don’t have a clue as to what they are doing.
If you read the account of Nehemiah’s rebuilding by so-called wall building experts you may well be astonished. For you see, the wall builders were musicians, perfume makers just to name a couple. However, if I told you everything about rebuilding the wall then you wouldn’t be encouraged to read the book.
Let me close in saying that dedicated individuals can accomplish the near impossible. Nehemiah accomplished his God-given task in 52 days.
See you next Sunday
