  • North Canton schools will benefit from one recreational runner’s search for a race.
Todd Davy, father of two Greentown elementary students, said he was looking for a local race to run in and heard about one sponsored by the Green Local Schools.
Davy ran with the idea of bringing a race to North Canton. He sought approval from superintendent Mike Gallina and Police Chief Stephan Wilder.
In light of the changes taking place within the district, Davy said it was a way to unite all four current elementary schools. “We are just trying to get everyone together and do something as a community,” he said.
The response has been amazing, he said. People stepped up to be sponsors, donate prizes and volunteer at the race. Davy said at least 30 people have donated many hours to the organization. Committee chairs include: Emily Kish, Marcie Seccombe, Sarah Mallamaci, Matt Ile, Meghan Boettler, Katie Miller, Carrie Spangler and Megan Harder.
Each school’s parent organization is on track to receive at least $3,375, Davy said. Well over 500 runners have signed up to participate in the race that is part of the Subway C h a l l e n g e Series.
Davy and his team planned not just the race but ways for students and families to prepare to run. Each school held a kick-off assembly; students were given fitness logs; three family fitness days have been held; and an incentive program is in place for prizes.
    THE SCHEDULE INCLUDES:
•Sunday, April 15 - The third fitness day will take place at 2 p.m. at the Hoover Park Trail, near the Little League field entrance. The theme is Hoover spirit – wear orange and black.
•Friday, April 20, 5K runners can pick up race packets and t-shirts at Clearmount Elementary
School from 4 p.m.- 7 p.m. Online registration closes at noon that day.
Sunday, April 22 – The Fun Run will begin at 2 p.m. and the 5K at 3 p.m. Davy said he’d like to see lots of fans in the high school stadium stands to cheer on runners as they cross the finish line. (see map of route).
