Katherine Guzzardi Spinelli is making 100 corsages for Mother's Day.
Katherine Guzzardi Spinelli believes being a mom and grandmother are life’s greatest blessings.
In honor of Mother’s Day, the first 50 moms to dine at Mama Guzzardi’s Italian Restaurant, 1107 N. Main Street, will receive one of Spinelli’s handmade silk flower corsages.
Spinelli, who will celebrate her 96th birthday in October, has been making corsages for the past ten years. This year, she made 100 and will be presenting the other 50 to her friends who she plays bingo with every Tuesday and Friday at the Champion Event Center, 340 Mississippi St. SE.
“I am so fortunate to have so many friends and truly enjoy the time we spend together at bingo,” Spinelli said. “The corsage is just a small gift to let them know that I will be thinking of them on Mother’s Day. “
In addition to playing bingo twice a week, Spinelli also completes a daily crossword puzzle. She believes that these two activities help keep her mind sharp. She also enjoys knitting and crocheting. “Laughter is important, too,”she added and said that she always tries to maintain a sense of humor.
Spinelli will be at the restaurant on Mother’s Day for a few hours to hand out the corsages and, of course, to enjoy a meal. “I always eat when I stop by,” she said.
Spinelli and her son, Tom Rollo, opened Mama Guzzardi’s Restaurant in 1986 and celebrated 25 years in business last fall. It remains a family business with daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Tom Songster, and granddaughter, Lori Prine, operating the business today.
Spinelli has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. “Keep your family close,” she said. “They really are the most important thing in this life.”
