CANTON Former Lake cross country standouts Jade Smith and Laura Tweedie were two of eight Malone University cross country runners recognized as NCAA Division II All-Academic by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Lake duo was also part of the women’s team receiving the NCAA Division II All-Academic Team distinction, an honor achieved by the men’s team as well.
The USTFCCCA individual honor recognizes student-athletes with at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA who finished in the top 30 percent of eligible runners at their NCAA regional meet and/or the top half of the field at the NCAA national championships.
The All-Academic Team Award is given to squads with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA who scored at a regional meet.
Smith and Tweedie, both juniors, were among five members of the women’s team to receive the individual All-Academic Award and their efforts on the course propelled the Pioneers to a sixth-place finish at the Division II Midwest regional championships in November.
As a team, the women’s squad compiled a 3.50 team GPA while the men’s team posted a 3.13 cumulative GPA.
