One hundred and thirty-five heads were shaved during the March 18 St. Baldrick’s event at Quaker Steak & Lube.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s mission is “to fund the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.”
Event organizer, Jaime Lenhart, said the silent auction was successful and,about $2,500 was donated by the restaurant, based on sales. The official money tally is not final and donations are still being accepted at the web site, www.stbaldricks.org/events/cantonohio.
St. Baldrick’s is held in memory of Abbey Foltz, who passed away at the age of 19 in 2000. Nan Foltz, Abbey’s mother, said the first year started with nine shavees. Foltz said many Plain Local employees volunteered at the event. The district held a $5 jeans day to benefit the cause. Nick Manos, a 2003 GlenOak grad, donated his hair to Locks of Love and then had his head shaved.
Servers and bartenders in the “Brickyard” bar donated 100% of tips on Friday, March 16, which totaled $1,500.
A few “honored” children attended who are in cancer treatment at Akron Children’s Hospital. Dr. Jeffrey Hord, head of the Oncology Division, spoke thanking all those involved. Akron Children’s has
received some funds from St.Baldrick’s for research being conducted at the hospital, Foltz said.
