JACKSON TWP. One of the oldest buildings in the Belden Village area was recently demolished to make way for new development. The Colonial Lanes bowling alley was in a 55-year-old building at the corner of Whipple Avenue and Everhard Road and was torn down in December and January.
DeVille Development has announced construction will begin on a new retail building in April that will house the popular retailer, The Duluth Trading Company, which sells workwear and accessories. Site work has already begun on the six-acre site to make room for the new store and for two other retail/restaurant opportunities.
Robert Brown of DeVille Development said a projected completion date for the Duluth building is sometime in October.
"The area is highly desirable because it is visible from the I-77 which has 80,000 vehicles traveling it daily," Brown said. "Duluth is planning to only have four stores open in Ohio. There’s already one in Cincinnati, Columbus and Avon. The company usually locates in big markets and they feel the Belden Village area has a regional draw. They do a lot of market research and they know where their customers are from and they expect to draw people from 50 to 100 miles away."
The Duluth Trading building will be 14,500 square feet. There are two additional buildings planned for that site, one is projected to be 4,000 square feet and the other around 8,000 square feet. Brown said they don’t have anyone signed for those buildings yet.
Duluth Trading Company was founded in 1989 in Duluth, Minn., by two brothers who started a company with the invention of the Bucket Boss, a durable canvas tool organizer that fit on a drywall bucket. Eventually, the company came out with an eight-page catlog called Portable Products, which was dedicated to improving and expanding on existing methods of tool storage, organization and transport.
Eventually, Duluth Trading expanded into workwear and it was the success of the Longtail T-shirt in 2002 that "put us on the map," according to the company's website. The Longtail T-shirt was designed to address "the age-old problem of plumber's butt."
The product line continued to expand and in 2005 a women's line was created. Duluth Trading now has more than 30 stores in 16 states.
