NORTH CANTON The North Canton Public Library is partnering with the Rotary Club of North Canton and Character Counts North Canton to host a community service fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The fair aims to assist community members in finding a volunteer or service opportunity that is a great match for them.
"In general, and especially in the wake of recent natural disasters, motivation to lend a hand and become more involved in community service efforts seems to be on a rise," said library Director Sandi Lang in a news release. "At the library, we average 750 patrons through our doors each day and this fair will introduce those people to local non-profit organizations as they look for ways to give back."
Service organizations in attendance will include Rotary Club of North Canton, Character Counts of North Canton, Friends of the North Canton Public Library, the North Canton Community Garden, the North Canton Chamber of Commerce, North Canton Heritage Society, Friends of the Little Art Gallery, New Work City Foundation, the North Canton Playhouse, the Hoover Historical Center, North Canton Lions Club, Quota International and more. Each organization will host an information table staffed with experts who can assist potential new volunteers.
Beginning Monday, the library and many of the service fair participants will be accepting in-kind donations for the Domestic Violence Project (DVPI) and the Meals on Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties "Wheels for Wags"program. DVPI is in need of full-size toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel, etc.) for victims of domestic violence. "Wheels for Wags" is a program in which Meals on Wheels delivers pet food to their clients in addition to human food. When Meals on Wheels volunteers realized that clients were sharing their meals with pets, resulting in inadequate nutrition for both the client and their pet(s), the organization began collecting donations of pet food for distribution to clients. Unopened bags/cans of pet food will be collected for this program leading up to and during the service fair.
