PLAIN TWP.  The Ohio Department of Transportation is in the process of a widening project in Plain Township and the city of North Canton on state Route 43/Market Avenue.

"The main goal of the project is to widen state Route 43 between 55th Street and Applegrove Street," ODOT public information officer for District 4 Justin Chesnic said. "The goal of the widening is to improve capacity and safety and reduce congestion."

State Route 43 is closed just south of Kingscote Circle through late June for the installation of a bike and pedestrian tunnel under the road. Chesnic said there will also be various lane restrictions on state Route 43 and there also may be some side street closures as well through the project.

This work is only a portion of a three-year $14.3 million project, which began last October.

The full project includes widening Market Avenue from two to five lanes between 55th Street and Applegrove Street. In addition, drainage improvements, the installation of a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel just south of Kingscote Circle and adding turning lanes at 55th Street, Schneider Street, East Maple Street and Easton Street will be added as a part of this project.

The entire project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2018.
