CANTON  The Honorable Ira G. Turpin Scholar Program Fund, in partnership with the Stark Community Foundation, recently awarded $500 scholarships to four high school students at a program held at the Edward L. "Peel" Coleman Center.

Turpin was the first black judge elected to the Stark County Common Pleas Court in 1972.

He also served on the 5th District Court of Appeals from 1983 until his death in 1989. 

This year's recipients were: 

Diondre Downing of Canton South;Zaviona  Fountain of Alliance; Darius Stokes of GlenOak; Elyssa Enrique of Hoover High; Ameer Carter, McKinley; Alana Hill, Sandy Valley; Cortaise Rogers of Alliance and Eliahs Sumpter of GlenOak.
