HARTVILLE  The Best Bib and Tucker shop in downtown Hartville held its first Cause for Consignment Day on Jan. 16. The day was a way to raise donations for two local nonprofit organizations through shopping or dropping off clothing for resale.

Shoppers could choose either Lake Township FISH or The Valentine Project to have 20 percent of their purchase donated. Or, patrons could drop off used clothing and accessories for resale and donate 50 percent of the selling price to one of the two organization’s consignment accounts. When the items sell, the donation gets credited to the customer’s selected nonprofit account.

"The store traffic has been steady today and we’re pleased to see the response to the Cause for Consignment event," said Megan Wise, co-owner of the shop with her mother. "(It was) also Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, so this is our way of giving a day of service in celebration. It’s been such a success that we will try to do another one in the spring. My mother and I own the store, so we are hoping to do this quarterly throughout the year."

Building awareness of the various groups is one of the reasons the Wise’s hold the fundraisers. Wise said while the Lake Township FISH is a well-known organization in the area, while the Valentine Project is a little less known. Each of the non-profits had representatives visit the store and talk to people about the organization’s mission, vision and goals.

"We have a long list of local non-profits that our customers can donate to anytime throughout the year. We do the fundraising as a way of giving back to the community, supporting those who support others in the community and building awareness so that others can donate," Wise said.
