JACKSON TWP. The Acme Fresh Market on Whipple Avenue is in the process of receiving a major facelift.
Acme is investing $5 million into the store and adding 18,000 square-feet to bring the total square feet to 73,000. The store, which opened as an Acme Click in 1982, is in need of an upgrade, Acme President Jim Trout said.
Trout was one of the managers that helped open the store in 1982 and said there are still signs of Acme Click in the space not being utilized that the company plans to expand into. Wallpaper samples still hang on the wall in the space because Acme Click used to sell wallpaper, Trout said. There is also a section for layaway, which was used a long time ago.
"I definitely am emotionally attached to this store," Trout said. "We are going to show this community the latest and greatest Acme."
Trout said the existing walls will come down once the additional space is renovated.
"We are going to bring it up to the standards of the customer today," Trout said. "That is what you have to do."
Plans call for the deli to be brought up front along with prepared foods and the bakery. A Good Day Cafe will also be added to the store along with creating natural and organic produce stand-alone departments. The store’s beer, wine and liquor will be moved to the back of the store, expanded and there will also be a wine specialist on hand.
"There is really no department that won’t be touched," Trout said.
The exterior of the building will also get a new look and the entrance will be expanded to make for a larger lobby for customers.
"Customers are going to see a brand new Acme Fresh Market," Trout said.
The store is expected to remain open during construction and all the improvements are expected to be completed by Thanksgiving.
"There will be some dust as we remodel, but our hard working Acme associates are going to make certain our customers can comfortably shop and enjoy our transition to a new, different, better, world class grocery store," Store Director Brian Toy said.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Trout said Acme continues to explore building a store in Medina and he said timing is everything. He said Medina will be the next location for a new store, but a timetable is not known.
Acme also is planning to make upgrades to the Norton store, 3200 Greenwich Road, and it will be remodeled much like the Whipple Avenue store.
