U.S. Bancorp has decided to close the branches it has operated at five Fishers Foods grocery stores.
CANTON U.S. Bancorp has notified customers that it is closing the five branches it operates at Fishers Foods stores in the area.
The bank, based in Minneapolis, sent letters to customers in mid December. A company spokesman said the branches — operated as U.S. Bank — would close on March 17.
"We take these decisions seriously and are working to make this a smooth transition for our customers and employees," the spokesman wrote in an email.
The spokesman declined to say why the branches are closing, but said it had nothing to do with the Canton-based grocer. "Fishers has been a great partner and we have appreciated their willingness to provide our leased space for the past five years," the spokesman wrote.
Jeffrey Fisher, president of Fishers Foods, said the stores now are looking at options to fill the space used by U.S. Bank. There have been inquiries, he said, but no decision have been made.
Fisher said the bank offered no details about the decision to close its branches here.
U.S. Bank opened offices in five Fishers' locations in March 2012. The bank had operated in local Giant Eagle stores for several years, but moved after the Pittsburgh-based grocer signed an exclusive deal with Huntington Bank.
The branches are in Fishers Foods stores at 4401 Tuscarawas St. W in Perry Township; 4403 Cleveland Ave. NW and 8100 Cleveland Ave. NW in Plain Township; 5213 Fulton Drive NW in Jackson Township; and 2216 Lincoln Way E in Massillon.
