CANTON Stark County residents spent last Friday night playing Monopoly while raising money for Meals on Wheels (MOW) of Stark and Wayne Counties. The annual fundraiser takes on a different theme each year and this year it was to have fun with the popular Monopoly game with the theme of "Make a Move to End Hunger."
The walls of the Alex D. Krassas Center in Canton were lined with properties and street names from the game. Event chairman Ann McCabe said monies are raised in a variety of ways.
"We did a play on the Monopoly game name and are calling it MOWONOPLY for Meals on Wheels," McCabe said. "We raise money through ticket sales, silent and live auctions and individual and corporate sponsors. The goal this year is to raise $150,000. The money is used to continue our daily mission of meal service to the home bound or those nutritionally at risk."
MOW CEO Ted Watko said the organization serves 1,400 meals daily in Stark and Wayne Counties.
"We serve hot, nutritious home cooked meals through our volunteers who also provide a home safety check for many our clients," he said. "Our volunteers are vital to our success and we are always looking for more volunteers."
Margaret Fowler was one of the many volunteers in attendance. She said she has been delivering meals to people in Massillon for more than 30 years.
"It’s such a good program and such a positive thing to do because it allows people to be able to stay in their homes and get nutritious meals throughout the week," Fowler said. "I just love volunteering and spending time with the people we serve. You make a lot of friends."
Dinner was included in the ticket price. There were many different items up for live auction such as chicken coop, a barrel-like bar and stools and a live puppy.
"Everyone is excited about bidding on the live puppy, which is a Jack Russell poodle mix and a rescue," McCabe said. "There is also a dinner package available to have dinner at Dave and Colleen Baker’s house and tickets to the 'Hamilton' show in Chicago."
