Several Stark Countians are among 22 people in the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown to be commissioned as Lay Leaders of Prayer on Nov. 15.

Leaders of Prayer are lay persons commissioned to lead acts of worship that in the past were most often led by the ordained clergy.

Among these services are morning and evening prayer, liturgy of the word with or without the distribution of Holy Communion, devotions, the vigil service and rite of committal from the Order of Christian Funerals, and in an emergency, Sunday celebrations in the absence of a priest.

They are commissioned for three years for service in their parish under the direction of the pastor.

Stark County's Lay Leaders of Prayer are Maria Dick of Central Catholic High School; Mark Violand and Anne Weeks, HolySpirit Parish in Lake Township; and Phillip Pillin of Walsh University and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown.

The commissioning will take place during evening prayer at the Our Lady of the Lakes/St. James parish in North Jackson. Monsignor Robert Siffrin, Vicar General of the Diocese of Youngstown, will preside.
