Internationally acclaimed organist Hector Olivera will perform at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 515 48th St. NW, Canton, on Sunday, April 15 at 3 p.m.
He will play a sophisticated and varied repertoire on St. Mark’s eclectic organ, which has both pipes and digital voices. W. Robert Morrison, director of music at St. Mark’s and well known as a gifted organist himself, calls Mr. Olivera “an absolute phenomenon.”
Born in Buenos Aires, Mr. Olivera began playing the pipe organ when he was three and by eighteen had performed for heads of state and celebrities throughout Latin America. He moved to the United States when he was offered a scholarship at Juilliard School of Music in New York. Three years later, his professional concert career was launched when he won the American Guild of Organists’ National Improvisation Contest.
Mr. Olivera has performed solo concerts and as guest soloist with prominent symphony orchestras worldwide in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Royal Albert Hall in London, Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, and Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.
The St. Mark’s venue will be much more intimate than a large concert hall, according to the Rev. Dustin Berg, Rector, who was an organ major at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn.
“It’s a space that’s well suited to great music,” he said. “Nobody is too far from the action, so you can really take it all in. This is going to be a wonderful opportunity to be in the presence of a master artist who has a total command of the instrument and his audience.”
