Walsh University will offer a variety of Interfaith events on Saturday, May 5, as part of its weekend celebration of the 50th anniversary of Vatican II. A panel will address the question “are there limits to interfaith dialogue. The speaker and panel discussion will take place from 1:15 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. All afternoon events are free.
The day will begin with a Shabbat morning service from 9:00 a.m. to 10 a.m. Concurrent sessions, which are listed at www.walsh.edu/vatican-ii-conference, will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The Orientalium Ecclesiarum panel discussion is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The afternoon panel discussion will feature Rabbi David Sandmel, PhD., the Crown-Ryan Chair of Jewish Studies at the Catholic Theological Union and Rabbi-Educator at Temple Sholom if Chicago. Rabbi Sandmel currently chairs the CCAR Committee on Interfaith Activities and is the CCAR Representative to the National Council of Synagogues and the International Jewish Committee on Interfaith Consultations (IJCIC).
Joining Rabbi Sandmel will be Dr. Umeyye Isra Yazicioglu, professor of Islamic Studies at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA; Fr. Robert Pelton, CSC, Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame and formperitus Cardinal Leo Suenen during Vatican II; and Reverend Dr. David Lee Morse, Ph.D., a United Methodist Clergyperson and Lecturer in United Methodist Studies at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Chair of the Western Pennsylvania Board of Ordained Ministry.
Following the panel discussion, at 2:30 p.m., an interfaith prayer service will take place.
